Book Week Tasks - Read Across the Universe

Here are a variety of missions that you can do during Book Week.

Mission #1
  • You've been chosen to represent Earth in a space ship travelling to the planet Draxnar, in the outer limits of the milky way.  You may take only ten things with a combined weight of one kilogram to remind you of home.  What would they be?

  • Luckily, the space ship has a tiny library.  Choose five books that will help entertain and inform you on your journey.

  • It is very cramped in your space ship.  What rules do you think you might need to help the crew live happily together?

  • Part way through your journey, you receive a communication from the planet Gorgasauron.  How many names can you invent and write down for an alien from Gorgasauron? You have five minutes so write fast!!

  • Draw one of the Drax and give them names.

  • On Draxnar it's your job to persuade one of the Drax, a creature about your age, to come back to Earth with you.  How do you persuade this Drax to leave Draxnar and visit Earth?

Mission #2
  • A portal has opened in the space-time continuum, allowing your to travel to another galaxy.  What are you doing when you discover the portal?  Which galaxy is it?  Describe what happens when you arrive at a new world.

  • What problems might arise for people from Earth who encounter aliens?  Would it ever be possible for us all to get along?

  • The alien race you meet offers you a video camera to record a message to send back to Earth.  In your video, briefly explain what has happened to you, and include come clips or still photographs of your new home.

  • The zoo near your new home is full of strange species.  Draw, label and describe some.

Mission #3
  • Design and create a card for a create from another galaxy, inviting it to join you in reading across the universe.

Mission #4
  • Using PAINT, generate an avatar (you as a character) with a space theme.

Mission #5
  • Design a logo for the theme, Read Across the Universe.  You could go it alone, or try an online logo generator like CoolText.

Mission #6
  • Would you rather go on a journey into space or to the bottom of the ocean? Why? Write a letter to a friend, persuading them to you with you.

Mission #7
  • Make a poster for the Book Week theme at a website called Poster My Wall.

Mission #8
  • Mix and Match some animals at Switch Zoo and create a strange world for them to live in.

Dr John's Badge - Digital Storytelling

Here are the 2 tasks that we have been working through so far to complete your Digital Storytelling badge during our ICT sessions.

Please use this blog link and follow the steps in order to complete your badge.

Task 1: - will be given to you in class, but when you have completed this task you then move onto this next task.

Photostory

Task 2

Your task is to create a digital picture story book for a younger student. It can be about anything, but the younger students must enjoy it.

  1. Open up Paint and create 8 pictures. When you finish the pictures save them as Page 1 in your photostory file. DON’T FORGET A FRONT COVER!
  2. When all of your pictures are finished open up Photostory and import the pictures in.
  3. Drag the photos into the correct order. Rotate if needed.
  4. Click on each picture and add the text. Each picture needs text, but don’t make it too long!
  5. Change the style and font so that it can be read easily.
  6. You can format pictures here if you would like.
  7. Press customise motion.
  8. Select the transition tab and add a transition to each picture.
  9. Alter the seconds to be 5 seconds.
  10. Save each picture.
  11. If you can, you could add voice.
  12. Click save your story for playback on the computer.
  13. Save it in your folder.
  14. View and share your story with a friend.
